The Whole Food Advantage

Whole food vitamins, such as those included in The Pilot's Super Supplement, are made from foods, not synthetic chemicals. They are safer, more-wholesome, and are better-absorbed than synthetic vitamins.

There is a reason why the vast majority of supplements on the market today are synthetic--and why 90% of supplements consumed in the U.S. are made in China: because they are cheap to manufacture. This is why there are so many negative reports on the benefits of nutritional supplements. Synthetic supplements oftentimes are not only not beneficial, but are, in fact, outright dangerous.

For a quick 90-second overview of the difference between whole-food nutrients and sythetics, click the graphic below and you will be taken to Discovery Channel's informative video.

The process for extracting concentrated nutrients from whole foods is expensive and time-consuming (compared to the mass production of synthetics); however, the methodology is not that complicated. All fiber and water is simply removed from the foods, leaving concentrated nutrients in a powder form.

The preferred method for extracting the core nutrients is "cold air" as it leaves all the nutrients in place. Heat application is a form of processing and, like cooking, destroys most of the nutrients.

Whole-food vitamins are absorbed and used just as the natural foods would be. Whole foods and whole food complexes are entire composites, not fractions of vitamins. Synthetic vitamins are not really vitamins at all. Not only are they chemical-based, as opposed to food-based, but only a fragment of the whole vitamin is synthesized. This is known as "fractionating"--pulling apart the constituents that make up a food vitamin. This is done to save space (i.e. manufacturing small pills) and of course to save money; however, the resultant "vitamin" does not contain a full complex of that original vitamin--just parts of it.

Fractioning changes the structure of the vitamin profoundly and renders it much less effective. These non-food "fractionated" vitamins are now foreign and unrecognizable to the body, and actually create drug-like reactions.

The counterpart to "whole-food" vitamins is "chelated minerals." As shown graphically in the aforementioned Discovery Channel video, synthetic minerals--like synthetic vitamins--are not absorbed efficiently by the body. Most synthetic minerals are simply passed through the system giving the user "expensive colored urine," but little or no nutritional benefit.

Chelated minerals, on the other hand, are food-based. Small plants are cultured to produce high amounts of specific minerals. These plants are then harvested for their particular minerals. The word chelate means to "draw-up," which is precisely what the plants do--they draw up the minerals from the earth where they exist in their natural state.

Since nature did not intend for man to obtain minerals by eating earth, but by eating plants, then that is the most natural method for a person to absorb his or her minerals. As the minerals are drawn up from the earth they are bound to amino acids, so they can be ingested and absorbed. These type of minerals are differentiated on quality supplements as an amino acid-bound chelated mineral. Typically you will see these denoted in parenthesis () next to the listing of a certain mineral.

Don't be fooled by a label that simply says "natural." To make this claim a supplement manufacturer is required to only include 10% of the ingredients from a natural source. And the ways the rules are written, almost anything can be claimed to be natural. To be sure you are obtaining truly natural, food-based ingredients look for whole food vitamins and amino acid-bound chelated minerals.

In creating The Pilot's Super Supplement, it was a basic requirement that all of or ingredient suppliers provide only whole-food vitamins and chelated minerals, so it is proudly stated on the bottle and in the supplement facts. For this reason, when taking The Pilot's Super Supplement you will know that you are ingesting quality food-based nutrients, not synthetic chemicals!

Please note that whole-food vitamins and chelated minerals take up a lot more space than microscopic, fractionated synthetic vitamins and minerals. This is one of the reasons why the recommended doseage of The Pilot's Super Supplement is 9 capsules per day--because you are actually ingesting tiny portions of food, and it requires more "bulk" to achieve the recommended daily allowances utilizing foods.

The other reason is because The Pilot's Super Supplement is designed to not only provide vitamins and minerals, but also digestive enzymes, probiotics and antioxidant foods and herbs. You can read more about the importance of including these other three nutrients in your daily regimen on the Five Essential Nutrients for Healthy Skies page.
